Information About Yoga!

Every one desires good health and it is the ultimate objective for utmost happiness in life. With continuous, systematic and regular practice of yoga one can maintain good health and also eliminate all the dreadful diseases. Before knowing what yoga is, it is important to be aware that yogic practice not only gives positive heath but also develops concentration and strengthens the immune system.

What is Yoga? The answer is very wide; it is both physical and mental. The term is derived from the word yui which means to join or yoke. This is a systematic and methodical process to control and develop the mind and body to attain good health, balance of mind and self realization.

Sage pathanjali, the great master of Yoga Darshana formulated the eight- fold path or eight limbs that form the structural framework for this practice which are-:

Yama(moral conduct): One must establish non violence, on stealing, truthfulness, celibacy, non covetousness to overcome basic desire; they form the moral virtues which if attended to purify human natureNimaya (personal discipline) has five elements: purity, contentment, austerity, self study and devotion to the lord. Niyamas are more intimate and personal and refer to the attitude we adopt toward ourselves so as to create a code for living soulfullyAsanas: is the practice of right postureBesides asansas there are kriyas, practices for purifying the internal and external organs by removing the toxins in them. For this purpose one must practice pranayam which is cessation of the flow of inhalation and exhalation. Prana is the life force of existence, the art of breathing more systematically.Prathyahara refers to dissociation and relates to restoration of senses to attain purity of mind.Dharana refers to fitness of mind through abstraction. It involves holding the mind to one thought or objectDhyana(meditation) involves control over sense of perception which forms the seventh limb of yoga and involves uninterrupted flow of concentrationIn Samadhi man goes above and beyond the earthly existence, sheds the consciousness of the body and all the other objects of this material world. Samadhi, man can stand utterly liberated from the limitation of time and space and enjoy eternal bliss.

In short yoga is a ladder of eight steps up which the man can climb above pain and suffering of the material world. Starting from yama it leads to Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Pratyahara, Dharna, Dhyana and finally Samadhi. All the above eight yogic concepts provide for cleaning the body and mind to attain perfection.
